A call to action
The contractor responsible for a new care home development in Worcestershire is urging the construction industry to keep pace with evolving trends in retirement living in the wake of a rise in demand across the country.
Wates Construction, which is currently on site at Audley Ellerslie in Great Malvern, has issued a call to action following a recently-published report by AMA Research which highlights the growing demand for retirement accommodation in Britain, where the older community is projected to grow to 21.7% by 2040.
Wates is now urging the construction industry to work in closer collaboration with retirement living developers to provide consistent quality and innovation in an increasingly-competitive marketplace.
John Carlin, business unit director of Wates Construction Midlands, said: “The retirement living sector is evolving and the report published by AMA Research reflects the needs of those making earlier transitions.
“The perception that retirement homes are an end-of-life solution is no longer relevant and it is clear that traditional views are changing among older people.
“Baby boomers tend to enter their retirement with a new lease of life and with a long-term view on their futures.
“Due to better lifestyle choices, health levels, and financial affluence, retirees are more frequently turning their sights towards quality retirement communities with wider lifestyle choices in a bid to prolong their leisure experiences and grow their social circles.
“As a result of these emerging trends, developers have more scope and capital to integrate facilities that are attuned to contemporary needs.
“It is, therefore, the construction industry’s responsibility to harness this investment and work in close collaboration with the client to create developments that stand out in an increasingly-competitive marketplace.”
Wates’ work at the £28m retirement village at Audley Ellerslie began in January 2016 and the first phase of the scheme is due to be completed this spring.
The development incorporates 101 residential units in a mixture of restored and new-build properties, as well a variety of amenities, such as a swimming pool, gym, and sauna.
In catering for its digitally-savvy clientele, Audley has integrated IT systems throughout and incorporated various hook-up points for customers using laptops.
Carlin said: “In working to increase supply nationwide, never has the phrase ‘evolution not revolution’ been more relevant in a progressively-changing sector.
“Contractors are the chief facilitators in making a developer’s vision a reality, and the knowledge and expertise we bring is unparalleled.
“Retirement living looks drastically different to 20 years ago. Vibrancy and personality has been injected into the sector, and our industry needs to keep pace with this exciting time of change.”
