Enniskillen unveils £267m acute hospital
THE NEW South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, opened its doors last month. The £267m hospital, run by Western Health and Social Care Trust, was designed by Stantec Anshen + Allen for the Northern Ireland Health Group (NIHG).
Located on a 52-acre greenfield site, the 69,000 sqm acute hospital is the first NHS hospital in Northern Ireland to have 100% single patient bedrooms. All 312 bedrooms benefit from their own en-suite bathrooms, expansive views of countryside and hotel quality finishes. Zoned clinical/patient areas help to minimise errors, improve infection control and enhance the patient experience.
The Hospital is broken up into a number of smaller blocks that allow patients to experience the facilities on a human scale. A palette of predominantly natural materials - locally-sourced stone, slate, timber and glass - help to ground the building in its landscape.
A key design aspect has been the sensitive placement of the building form with minimum cut and fill to the greenfield site. The masterplan preserves and enhances the site drainage patterns and surrounding ecosystems, whilst the use of intensive and extensive green roofs brings opportunities for ecological niches to prosper.
NIHG comprises FCC, Interserve, P Elliott and Allied Irish Bank.
