£33m Bridgwater Community Hospital awaits go ahead
THE £33M BRIDGWATER Community Hospital in Somerset is expecting a planning decision by the end of the month. The Hospital will include 30 inpatient beds, a midwifery-led maternity unit and a minor injury unit as well as diagnostic and X-ray departments. It will also offer on-going therapy and integrated rehabilitation services, an outpatient’s clinic and a day treatment centre.
The original hospital in Bridgewater was built in 1813 and has become tired and outdated. The new development recently received a £16m grant from the Government with the remaining balance to be paid for by NHS Somerset and the Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
Somerset PCT intends to build the new hospital on land at Bowers Lane, Bridgewater, dependent on planning permission. The ProCure21+ project, which is expected to be completed by autumn 2014, has been designed by architects DKA, with Gleeds providing project management, quantity surveying and CDM co-ordination.
Over the past five years, three out of Somerset's 13 community hospitals have been replaced - in Frome, Minehead and South Petherton; and over two thirds of the county’s 76 GP practices have been rebuilt, extended or refurbished. Work is also underway on the new Jubilee Building at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, which involves 112 single rooms for patients and all with en-suite facilities.
