The contract to build a new £9.8m therapies and outpatients building at Stoke Mandeville Hospital has been awarded to Modern Methods of Construction specialist MTX Contracts Ltd.
The new two-storey facility for Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust will replace the existing outdated therapies and outpatients units and bring modern, high‑quality therapy services together under one roof.
The MTX contract includes demolition of the existing buildings and preparation of the cleared site for the new unit.
The dedicated space for treatment and rehabilitation is designed to make visits easier and improve the experience for patients and staff. Facilities will include 14 private consultation rooms, a large rehabilitation gym, a dedicated hand therapy area, physiotherapy cubicles, specialist rooms for orthotics all located on the ground floor. Space for the Trust’s administrative support teams and plant rooms will be located on the upper floor.
A total of 38 precisely engineered structural steel units will be used to create the new combined facility, and will be factory-manufactured offsite while the demolition of existing buildings and ground works are under way. The structural units will be craned onto the site and rapidly made weatherproof to enable fit out and mechanical and electrical services installation within the new building, streamlining the construction process.
Linked access to the main hospital building will be reinstated as part of this development to maintain familiar access routes in and out of the proposed building whilst minimising disturbance to other hospital facilities during construction.
Charmaine Hope, Chief Estates and Facilities Officer, said: "This project is part of our long‑term commitment to transform the Trust estate and improve services. By creating modern facilities in place of the outdated Therapies building, we’re building a future‑ready environment that meets the needs of our community and supports high‑quality care."
MTX Contracts Ltd is also currently working with Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust to develop a landmark six-storey building at the Wycombe Hospital site. The 15,000m² six-storey building is being designed by MTX in partnership with the Trust to enable core services to move out of the current Wycombe Tower Block, which is unfit for long-term use.
The new state-of-the-art facility will deliver a range of vital services including cardiology, stroke-care, operating theatres and critical care in future phases of the project once further funding has been secured. The first new clinical facility – an Endoscopy Department – is planned to open in 2027.
MTX Managing Director David Hartley said: “The hybrid Modern Methods of Construction approach developed by MTX is designed to give health Trusts the best possible estate assets in the shortest possible timescales; combining advanced new methods of building with traditional skills.
“Our company is dedicated to delivering high quality new facilities for NHS Trusts, which partner with us to benefit from our vast experience working in this sector. Our continually evolving expertise spans across the full life cycle of a project, from concept and planning through construction to maintenance and operation.”
