Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust develops wayfinding strategy across estate

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has appointed Placemarque to develop a wayfinding strategy across its estate.

The consultancy, which specialises in navigation and user movement, will carry out a review of around 25 sites, including five hospitals and a number of community health centres. The work will assess how patients, visitors and staff move through buildings, with recommendations covering signage, spatial design and other navigation aids.

The review includes Guy’s Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital, Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Harefield Hospital and Royal Brompton Hospital, alongside approximately 20 health centres. The process will involve site analysis and stakeholder engagement.

Placemarque has previously completed a wayfinding strategy for the Children’s Day Treatment Centre at Evelina London Children’s Hospital. The new appointment extends its work in the healthcare sector, including previous projects with University College London Hospitals.

Tom Brookson, project director at Placemarque, said the work would include both site-level assessments and a wider review of the estate. ‘This is a very in-depth process which takes several months and will ensure consistency across buildings and services,’ he said.

He added that the project would also consider branding and digital integration as part of a more consistent approach to navigation across multiple sites.

Berta Nuredini, wayfinding project manager at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, said: ‘Wayfinding is a vital part of the patient experience and of creating welcoming, accessible environments. The new strategy will help us develop a consistent and accessible approach across our estate.’
