New inpatient unit to replace outdated dormitory wards

Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust has appointed a contractor to deliver its proposed new mental health inpatient facility at Mossley Hill, Liverpool.

Following a competitive tendering process overseen by Liverpool & Sefton Health Partnership, GRAHAM was chosen as the preferred construction partner for the project, which will enable the trust to phase out traditional shared dormitory-style mental health wards in line with government demands.

Providing 80 single bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, the design, by Gilling Dod Architects, is centred around providing therapeutic spaces within light and airy environments as well as facilities for family visits and multi-faith worship. Outside there will be accessible and safe garden areas.

Mersey Care chief executive, Professor Joe Rafferty, said: “This project allows us to give the people of Liverpool what they need – the very best care in a modern, therapeutic environment with single ensuite facilities and easy access to gardens and open space.

“Our current inpatient estate has been identified as a limiting factor in service users’ recovery. More than that, by delivering better buildings we’re also setting newer and higher standards in mental health care for everyone.” Plans for the new development were approved in 2022 and the former hospital buildings, which were deemed unfit for purpose, were demolished in February of this year.

And a sod-cutting ceremony recently took place marking the start of construction on the new facility. Mersey Care’s chief operating officer for the local services division, Donna Robinson, said: “We are really looking forward to when we will see our new site with all of its ensuite single bedroom accommodation for people within Liverpool. “They will have a therapeutic environment to rest and recover from their crisis episode.”
