A watched pot…

As the old expression goes  …never boils.

But sometimes the person preparing food can be distracted and leave the pot or pan unwatched for a time. Worse still, be so distracted that they forget about it all together.

This is when kitchen nightmares begin. Either the contents of the pan will boil dry, become blackened, let off smoke, and create a smelly mess, probably setting off the smoke or fire alarm.

Or worst case, the pan contains oil, which has crept up to a dangerously high temperature with the potential to reach flashpoint, ignite and set fire to the kitchen.

We can all do without either of these outcomes. HobSensus is a cooker cut-off device that is mounted on the wall above the cooking surface. It has a timer that can be set to 15, 20, 30, 120 minutes, enough for most pan-based meals. With a press of the button, the timer activates and when the time has elapsed, HobSensus cuts the power to the hob making it safe.

But the ingenious aspect of this device is the 64-zone sensor that ‘watches’ the cooking surface. If any of the zonal areas reach dangerous levels, the green ‘Active’ LEDs begin to flash orange, accompanied with a bleeping sound to attract the attention of anyone close by. If no action is taken, the LEDs flash red, the bleeping becomes more intense and then the power to the hob is cut, making the kitchen safe, well in advance of any flash or ignition point.

Hobsensus is a two-unit system. The Sensor Head, situated above the cooking surface and the Power Switching Unit which is usually located under the work surface between the incoming power supply and the hob. The two devices communicate via a secure radio signal. The Sensor Head powered with a low voltage connection from the Power Switching Unit. Where this is not practical the unit can be powered with 4 AA batteries with an expected lifespan of 2 years.

A cooker cut-off is a sensible installation in any kitchen, but particularly for those at greater risk for example ones used by people living with dementia, in sheltered or assisted housing or student accommodation.

Conscientious landlords and carers can be confident that their kitchens are a safer place with HobSensus on the wall.
